What is the difference between a primary beneficiary and contingent beneficiaries?

Your contingent beneficiary(ies) is next in line to inherit the benefit should your primary beneficiary(ies) die before you do. You can choose anyone you’d like to be your beneficiary(ies). Many people name their spouse/partner as their primary beneficiary and their child(ren) as contingent beneficiaries. You will name your primary beneficiary(ies) on your application.
